The great prehistoric herbivores got into the habit of protecting themselves from those brutish tyrannosaurs by covering the Armoring of their Armor with a Fortress of Thorns. Leeks went through a similar evolution with this chip, to protect themselves from brute-force leeks with a prehistoric AI that doesn't take damage return into account.
The harder you hit, the more damage return hurts. Especially since the return is calculated on the raw damage, before shields reduce it. You'd better account for it in your AI rather than betting everything on your Strength.

With lots of thorns on you, you might manage to get the Thorny trophy or the Hedgehog trophy. You can even share them with your allies. For more damage return, you can combine this chip with Mirror or Bramble.
